Brief History
Established in Omaha as a Girls Club in 1975, our first humble home was donated space in the basement of an inner city church and our first enrollment was all of six girls. Fast forward 30 plus years. Now we have a new name: Girls Inc. of Omaha. We have two centers with libraries, teen centers, and computer labs. We have a playground, a gym, a woodshop, and an art room with a kiln. On an average school day, we serve 180 to 200 girls. During the summer months, that number swells to near 300 daily. Annually, we serve over 1,000 girls in our centers and thousands more with our outreach programs. Over the years, our members have grown up and grown out of Girls Inc. They go out into the community as teachers, pharmacists, social workers, lawyers, and more. Some of our current members are the daughters of former members. Over the years, there have been many changes at Girls Inc. What remains unchanged is our continuing dedication to the gender specific programming to overcome the social, legal, and economic barriers that keep girls from achieving their full potential. It is and always will be all about the girls. For more information about Girls Inc., visit our national web-site. See our mission statement, Board of Directors & Management staff. Girls Inc. Online extends Girls Inc. research-based programming to girls everywhere in a safe, membership-based web community where members share and connect on message boards, meet inspiring women, and participate in fun activities.
